Reverie: a state of dreamy meditation or fanciful musing

As we drift into the final month of summer, what have you been dreaming of? What is nourishing your soul? Just as we feed our bodies to keep them healthy,  the soul too needs tending--through beauty, imagination, and stillness. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the  nourishment that comes from allowing our minds to wander, loose as a summer breeze, alighting on whatever draws our attention. That’s when this short poem by Emily Dickinson came to mind.


To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee,
One clover, and a bee.
And revery.
The revery alone will do,
If bees are few.


I love how the poet immerses herself in both imagination and the sensory world around her. A Rogue Writing class feels a lot like this poem: loose, light, simple, yet profound; and full of the possibilities our imagination brings to life.
At its heart, Rogue Writing is an attention practice. We practice staying present, articulating our feelings, our thoughts, our wonder. As Maggie Smith notes: 

Poetry is one of the greatest tools we have to wield our own attention. To consider our own lives and the lives of others. To help us live creatively and compassionately. To use that attention to lean into wonder, and joy, and truth, and to find hope. 

Over and over again in our Rogue Writing circles I see people experience the joy of connection, recognizing through their sharing that they are not alone. I see people feel the relief of writing their truth. I witness people feeling hope when they find a lost story in a cracked teacup that helps them accept the present moment.

New Rogue Writing Circles
Beginning in September I will have two new Rogue Writing circles: One on Thursday mornings, 8:30-10am and one on Wednesday evenings 7pm-8:30pm PST.  If you’d like to join a circle but these times don’t work for your schedule, let me know.
